old school

While there has been quite a bit of talk about the majority African-American support Senator Obama has, what is more interesting is the Black support he is not getting.

Quietly, but unmistakably, a divide has been growing among African-American voters.

Old School vs. New School.

Democratic candidate Barack Obama recently turned down an opportunity to appear at Tavis Smiley’s “State of the Black Union 2008″ Conference in New Orleans on February 23th. Senator Obama did, however, offer for his wife, Michelle Obama, to appear in his appearance. Tavis declined to allow Mrs. Obama to attend the conference.

The opinions in black blogging community came fast and furiously. With many supporting Obama...

At last year’s SOTBU Al Sharpton, Cornel West and others joined Tavis is roundly criticizing Obama for not attending. Where was Barack that weekend? Oh yeah, he was announcing his bid for the U.S. presidency. This year, Obama is busy trying to win Texas, which has emerged as the firewall state for the Hillary Clinton campaign. Obama wins Texas; Hillary goes home. But Tavis & Co. think Obama should spend precious hours chatting with them about their agenda?

Others took the other side.

Mr. Obama! Have you confirmed your attendance in New Orleans? Black America set this agenda four years ago. Have we been lost in a political beauty contest, in Cosby show fantasies of the middle class? Why are the issues of social, justice, poverty, corporate occupation and exploitation, police brutality, and the situation of destabilization in Africa not important?

What this controversy was really about had little to do with a conference. It had to do with power. And do the old(er) Black leaders still have juice?

It doesn’t seem they have it with Obama.

The real sad part to me is how these old(er) African American leaders fall to the same, old, tired, predictable tricks.
What did Tavis do when it became obvious the people were taking Obama’s side and not his? He played the victim.

The same card is now being played by African-American super-delegates who are refusing to agree to follow the wishes of the people in their districts. They are calling themselves victims, too.

Sad.

Hillary showed up at SOBU and took questions from Tavis.
He didn’t ask her one tough question. See for yourself. It plays like an Oscar interview.

It seems like Obama is changing a lot of things. Win or Lose, the effects on the African American political structure in the US may be the most significant.

You forgot to discuss the point that Bill Clinton had enjoyed great support from African American community. Hillary may receive similar support too.

What I think is media and people like you have become biased against Hillary Clinton just because of her gender. This is absolutely wrong.

Obama hasn't ever asked African-American voters to support him only because he will be the first black president in US history. He never used racial way to win the debate.

Yes..he is on the wayto change african-american politics forever in US. Obama, child of Kenyan father and American mother, is the role model of the population of African Americans who see him as the culmination of the civil rights movements and other movements against racial inequality in the country.

I have no much idea about black politics in US. But I am surprised to know that in the country like US, leaders contest and win elections on racial issues. We Indians are better we have caste issues not racism.

Obama was born citizen of US. he is not tainted by the scandals of the former President Bill Clinton. Bill's legacy, not her gender, is really damaging Hillary's chances in debate. Most of the US citizens don't want to see Clinton again in the White House again, even as a guest. Obama appears fresh and uncorrupted leader. He is our best face forward to our allies that would help to repair damages. He is the standout candidate and race of course doesn't matter.

Republicans just lay off from the debate. African-americans make up about 10 per cent of the US electorate. They are considered as the most reliable Democratic block.

There is fear in the air in US - Obama might be killed because African American risks having his ambition thwarted through violence, history says this. The killing of civil rights leader Martin Luther King some 40 years ago is still in mind. Obama's life may go under life threat before his entry in the White House. I am scared for his life.

Garrett's fear is correct. Americans shouldn't forget Luther King's assassination. Obama should take good care of him.

I think Hillary Clinton has, unlike Obama, the experience to control America's various problems ranging from poverty and unemployment to foreign policy woos.

Gerrett has raised a major question here- the security of Obama- For several black Americans, its a matter of pride as well as fear too. Obama is moving ever closer to become first black president in US. Are Obama, their family, their friends safe?

Even I feel fear in my 74-year-old aunt's voice every time I make call to her who are in US. She always says me she is just afraid. He fears history will repeat itself and Obama will be killed.

When Colin L. Powell had decided to run for the presidency, Powell’s wife, Alma, had expressed her concern publicly about his safety. The same emotions are going on with Obama's run for presidency now.
